Salvador Dalì, la Divina Commedia

From 04 November 2020 to 30 December 2020

In 1950, to celebrate the 700th anniversary of Dante Alighieri's birth, the Italian government commissioned Dalì to illustrate a special edition of the Divine Comedy.
100 watercoloured woodcuts were created, 33 watercolours each for Inferno, Purgatory and Paradise plus an introduction, an original and unique expression of the imagination of the most famous and visionary representative of Surrealism.

Dalì works by placing a particularly significant character or event in the centre of each panel and the representation he makes of it is oneiric and desecrating: Hell, Purgatory and Paradise emerge suspended between dream and reality, in a single masterpiece.

The journey into Dante's beyond world is then interpreted in a metaphysical and psychological key, mixing in a masterful way the deepest sense of the Comedy with Salvador Dalì's artistic sense.

The Majid Foundation is honoured to exhibit to the Swiss public the complete collection of the great master's illustrations, while also paying homage to the great poet Dante Alighieri.
