Terra Vecchia

From Rasa you quickly arrive at Terra Vecchia, the original village of Rasa. Terra Vecchia has been fully renovated by the Terra Vecchia Villaggio foundation. Every little detail was meticulously restored in order to preserve the soul of the village: the church and adjacent monastery, the houses, the stables and the traditional drystone walls.

The history of the hamlets of Rasa and Terra Vecchia can be traced back to the emigration from the region. In 1631, residents of Rasa found work at customs points in Livorno and they emigrated. After returning home, they built new and elegant buildings at the site of what is now Rasa, and they financed church buildings. The old village of Terra Vecchia was abandoned and literally engulfed by nature until the restoration process began.
