The pilgrimage site of Sacro Monte Madonna del Sasso of Orselina is located on a rock spur above the city of Locarno. It is one of the most important historical and religious places in the canton of Ticino.
The pilgrimage church towers over a deep, wild valley. From the arcades of the church, you can admire the superb Gulf of Locarno and the surrounding mountains.
The Via Crucis on Sacro Monte, the holy mountain, runs past picturesque chapels and examples of art in the midst of nature.
You can also reach Sacro Monte on the Locarno–Madonna del Sasso funicular, which is close to Locarno-Muralto station.
A visit to the Museum Casa del Padre is very rewarding too. This was inaugurated at the end of September 2016 and is located in the oldest part of the monastery (open from April to October).
