The valley of the painters

The Vigezzo Valley is famous above all for its art. It is therefore also known as the valley of the painters. There are various forms of painting to be discovered here, whether landscapes, portraits or religious works of art.

At the heart of this tradition is the Scuola di Belle Arti Rossetti Valentini in Santa Maria Maggiore, which was founded in 1878 by the painter Giovanni Maria Rossetti Valentini. The school is the artistic and intellectual focus of the valley as well as a unique model for the entire Alpine area.

The Vigezzo Valley has attracted and accommodated many travelling artists, particularly from Lombardy. They have created a variety of works here and adorned houses and churches with their wall paintings. You can still admire examples of these paintings today, on the facades of houses and chapels in the small hamlets along the mountain trails.
