A Winter for 2

Winter on board the Vigezzina-Centovalli Railway doubles!

From 8 January to 3 March the promotion is back: two people travel for just 37 €. Along the Italian-Swiss route there are wellness spa experiences, outdoor activities on the snow and romantic villages with museums not to be missed!

A railway crosses always the same and constantly different territories: this is also the case for the trains that have been travelling between Domodossola and Locarno since 1923, with views that in the winter season give new emotions. Popular for the Foliage Train, the Vigezzina-Centovalli Railway operates 365 days a year and also for this winter it will offer an unmissable promotion: from January 8th to March 3rd you can buy 2 round-trip tickets to travel on the entire line – departing from the Italian terminal, Domodossola or from Locarno in Ticino, with the possibility of making an intermediate stop to visit the area – paying only one (37 € per couple, including reservation and possible supplement for travelling on panoramic trains).

The winter sunsets along the 52 km route covered by the Italian-Swiss convoys can offer panoramas of rare charm: admiring them as a couple on board can turn into a magical experience.

Waiting for the snowflakes, in fact, the white and blue convoys are already travelling along a mid-mountain route where, favoured by the winter cover of the vegetation, the gaze opens to the peaks of Val Vigezzo and the historic villages nestled between Italy and Switzerland. After last year's success, the "Winter for 2" promotion is back: all those who buy online (here the direct link: https://prenota.vigezzinacentovalli.com/?action=corsecerca) two tickets for the Domodossola-Locarno or Locarno-Domodossola route (valid for one day, with the possibility of making only one intermediate stop) will pay half.

ATTENTION: THE SALES SYSTEM ONLY PROPOSES THE "WINTER FOR 2" TICKET IF TWO PEOPLE ARE SELECTED. IF A MULTIPLE OF 2 IS SELECTED, THE SYSTEM ONLY PROPOSES THE NORMAL TOURIST TICKET.

The terminuses

The two terminals, Domodossola and Locarno, deserve an in-depth visit, even on short winter days. The capital of Ossola is completing the overall renovation of its historic centre, expanding the area closed to vehicular traffic: with a few steps, from the railway station of Domodossola you reach the enchanting Piazza Mercato, the beating heart of the city, and then the renovated and pedestrian Via Rosmini and from here you walk towards the UNESCO site of Sacro Monte Calvario. Don't miss a visit to the Civic Museums of Palazzo San Francesco (open to the public from Thursday to Sunday, 10-13 and 15-18).

Locarno presents itself to the traveller with a double soul: romantic, thanks to its view of the Ticino shore of Lake Maggiore, to be admired while walking along the elegant lakeside, but also intimate and historic, in the narrow streets of the oldest heart, in the spectacular Piazza Grande – one of the most beautiful in the whole of the Canton of Ticino – or in the Castello Visconteo. Another unmissable destination is the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Sasso, in a panoramic position with superlative views of Lake Maggiore, reachable on foot or via the characteristic funicular (a short walk from the train station). For those looking for wellness and relaxation, the place to go is "Termali Salini & Spa", a paradise with hot thermal waters: an elegant design path on two floors with natural saline waters at 40°C, Turkish bath, sauna, jets and waterfalls for regenerating moments overlooking the lake.

The Vigezzo Valley

A stop in Valle Vigezzo, the realm of winter sports thanks to the station of the Piana di Vigezzo, at 1700 metres altitude. Thanks to an agreement, travellers of the Vigezzina-Centovalli Railway can take advantage of particularly advantageous discounts to venture on the Vigezzina slopes (and vice versa, skiers can take advantage of promotions to board the trains). At altitude, however, you can not only get to ski: snowshoes at your feet, there are many trails suitable for even not too experienced hikers and the "I sabati della Piana" initiative combines delicious food and wine proposals with magical night excursions.
For lovers of slow outdoor activities, the Val Vigezzo offers a pedestrian path of almost 15 km immersed in a pine forest of spruce trees, also accessible with snowshoes: the main access is just a stone's throw from the centre of Santa Maria Maggiore, where lovers of narrow skiers can also find the slopes of the Centro del Fondo. Crossing the border, from Orselina (connected to Locarno by the funicular) the modern cable car takes you to over 1300 metres of Cardada, where in January and February special evening excursions in the moonlight with snowshoes and a typical dinner are offered.

In the main centre of the Valle dei Pittori, Santa Maria Maggiore, two truly unique museums are worth a visit: the Casa del Profumo Feminis-Farina, which tells the all-Italian story of one of the oldest and most famous perfumes in the world, the Acqua di Colonia, which was born here thanks to the initiative of two emigrants from Vigezzo, and the School of Fine Arts "Rossetti Valentini", which has recently been renovated and expanded, which houses the artistic treasures of the Valle dei Pittori (both museums will be open every weekend and holders of the "Winter for 2" tickets will be guaranteed a 50% discount on their second admission to the museum). Also in Santa Maria Maggiore, special offers and proposals designed by the tour operators will be available for railway travellers (all information online at www.santamariamaggiore.info).
